Tattoo aftercare
Taking care of your new tattoo in the first few weeks is important for how it looks in the long run. Follow these guidelines. If you have any concerns, get in touch or consult your artist.
Remove the wrap
Remove the wrap after the time your artist told you (usually a few hours). Wash your hands, then gently wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and a little mild, fragrance-free soap. Pat dry with a clean towel — do not rub.
Moisturise
Apply a thin layer of aftercare cream or ointment as recommended by your artist. Do this a few times a day for the first week or two. Don't overdo it: too much can block the skin.
Don't pick or scratch
The tattoo will flake and may itch as it heals. Do not pick, scratch or peel it. Let the skin shed naturally. Scratching can pull out ink and cause scarring or infection.
Avoid sun and water
Keep the tattoo out of direct sun and avoid swimming pools, spas and long baths for at least 2–3 weeks. Sun and chlorine can fade or irritate the tattoo while it's healing.
Wear loose clothing
Wear loose, breathable clothing over the tattoo so it doesn't stick or rub. Avoid tight straps or rough fabrics on the area until it's fully healed.
Healing time
Surface healing usually takes 2–3 weeks; the skin may take a few weeks more to settle. If you notice redness, swelling, pus or fever, contact your artist or a doctor.
This is general advice. Your artist may give you specific instructions — follow those first. If in doubt, ask your artist.
